Choosing
When comparing countertop options, look beyond the slab color. The edge profile, seam placement, sink, backsplash, and overhang all contribute to the finished result. Some choices depend on the material and thickness, so review them with the fabricator before final approval.
A straight or eased edge gives a simple, clean outline. Rounded profiles soften corners, while more decorative profiles create a traditional effect. A mitered edge can create the appearance of a thicker slab, often on an island or waterfall side. The available profiles depend on the slab and fabrication method. Ask to see a sample or photo at a similar thickness.
Seams are joints between countertop pieces. Their location depends on the room layout, slab dimensions, material, and practical fabrication limits. Patterned stone may require extra planning so veins or color movement meet as intended. Ask the team to review the proposed seam locations and slab layout before fabrication; the exact appearance can vary with the material.
Choose the sink and faucet early enough for cutout planning. Undermount, top-mount, and integrated sink options have different installation details. Faucet holes, soap dispensers, filtered-water taps, and air switches should be identified before fabrication. Keep product specifications available and confirm the selected fixtures are compatible with the countertop plan.
A short backsplash protects the wall at the counter, while a full-height slab backsplash can create a continuous stone feature. Island overhangs can provide seating, but they must be planned with the support system and layout. The right dimensions depend on the design and construction; ask the project team to confirm what is feasible and whether additional support is required.
Look at samples beside cabinet finishes, flooring, and paint under the room’s lighting. For natural stone, view the actual slab when possible. Save the approved selections and ask the fabricator to document the edge, sink, seam, backsplash, and overhang details before fabrication.
