After install

The simplest routine for most countertops is to wipe spills promptly and clean with a soft cloth and an approved cleaner. Specific care varies by stone, brand, finish, and treatment. Keep the manufacturer or supplier care sheet for your exact surface.

Natural stone

For routine care, use a cleaner recommended for the stone and avoid products that may damage the surface. The Natural Stone Institute cautions that acidic cleaners such as lemon or vinegar can etch calcareous stones, including marble, limestone, and travertine. Abrasive powders can scratch some finishes. Sealing may improve stain resistance for certain stones, but it does not make stone stain-proof, and some stones may not need sealing. Ask the supplier whether your specific slab should be treated and how often.

Marble

Marble can react with acids found in foods and household products. Wipe acidic spills promptly and use a product approved for marble. Etching is a change in the surface finish, not necessarily a stain, so routine cleaning may not remove it. Discuss the appearance and care expectations before selecting marble for a busy kitchen.

Engineered quartz

For Caesarstone quartz and mineral surfaces, the manufacturer recommends mild cleaning and advises avoiding direct heat and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Use trivets or hot pads and follow the instructions for the particular brand. Do not assume “quartz” products from different manufacturers share identical cleaning rules or warranty coverage.

Porcelain and ultra-compact surfaces

Use the product’s own care guide. Some manufacturers recommend mild soap and water for everyday cleaning, while tougher residues may require specific products. Heat, surface finish, and cleaning recommendations can vary by product line.

A simple care checklist

  • Blot spills and wipe the surface with a soft cloth.
  • Use a cleaner approved for the exact surface and finish.
  • Use cutting boards; do not treat a countertop as a cutting surface.
  • Use trivets or hot pads unless the product manufacturer explicitly permits direct hot cookware.
  • Avoid mixing cleaning chemicals. Never mix ammonia and bleach.

Good to know

If you are unsure what caused a mark, ask the fabricator or manufacturer before applying a stain remover, acid, solvent, or abrasive cleaner.
